Walter Plunkett Costume Sketches

By 1936 Walter Plunkett was known in Hollywood as the foremost authority on period costumes, leading him to be hired as the costume designer for Gone With The Wind. His new job was monumental, requiring him to create more than 5,000 separate items of clothing for more than 50 major characters and thousands of extras. Each costume was created first as a detailed sketch, and today, the original costume sketches are extremely rare, selling for thousands of dollars each.

In 1939, there was no costume design category at the Academy Awards. Selznick himself said that if there were, Plunkett would have won it for "Gone With The Wind." Walter Plunkett would be nominated for the Academy Award ten times and in 1951, he was finally recognized by the Academy for his costume designs for "An American in Paris."

In the 1970's Mr. Plunkett created a signed, numbered, Limited Edition of just 1,000 Lithograph Edition Folios which featured six of his most famous Gone With The Wind Costume Designs. We are proud to offer these rare Walter Plunkett lithographs of his Gone With The Wind Costume Designs which will be the centerpiece of any Gone With The Wind collection.
